MSA Board Candidates
As recently advised, additional MSA members have been put on temporary furlough. We know this is disappointing. These temporary steps are important to manage the unprecedented Covid-19 situation; however, we are nonetheless saddened. It is our hope these actions will be short-term, and operations will return to normal as soon as it’s safe to do so. In the meantime, we will continue to advocate vigorously on all MSA members’ behalf.
On April 6, 2020, MSA and MacEwan University signed a letter of understanding which outlines the agreement regarding temporarily furloughed employees due to COVID-19. Please refer to this letter here. This round of impacted MSA members is approximately 100 employees and they work in all areas of MacEwan.
For the duration of the COVID-19 furlough, both the Employer and Employee premium cost for the Employee & Family Assistance Program, Extended Health Benefits, Basic Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment and Short-Term Disability will be paid. Eligibility for Short & Long Term Disability Insurance will continue for at least the first 60 days. Employees will be given the option to buy back their pensionable services according to the rules of LAPP. Please refer to Letter of Understanding IX for additional details.
To be clear, a temporary furlough is not an abolishment of the position. The expectation is that each employee put on furlough will be recalled. Although the notification process has been modified due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, MSA is in contact with each of the furloughed employees to assist them through the process.
The situation we are facing due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, combined with cuts to the post-secondary sector, is the most challenging I have faced in my tenure as MSA President and in all my years as a MacEwan employee. But I know we will get through this. We must continue to support one another. I commend each of you for your hard-work and dedication to MacEwan, not just during these challenging times, but always. I assure you that MSA will remain steadfast in our work to mitigate this difficult situation.
