MSA Board 2020/21
Earlier this week the University provided notice to 22 MSA members that their positions were being permanently abolished as a result of funding cuts imposed by the provincial government. This loss will be felt by the entire MacEwan community and will once again have negative impacts on everything from workload of remaining staff and faculty, to the student experience. We are deeply saddened by this. As a result of MSA’s advocacy and the last minute decision by the government to remove the expenditure cap for MacEwan, a number of our members originally slated for layoff were able to keep their jobs. We will continue to work hard to mitigate this difficult financial situation and advocate in the best interest of the MSA membership.
Please be assured that MSA is working with the impacted members to ensure that all the rights under our collective agreement are provided by the University to our members, and we will provide individual advice and support as needed.
MSA acknowledges how stressful the abolishment process is on all members. We encourage each of you to take advantage of the resources that are available for assistance. Please remember that the confidential Employee and Family Assistance program can be reached at 1-844-880-9142 or https://www.workhealthlife.com/. Although we are still not physically on campus due to COVID-19, MSA staff can easily be reached by email, Teams chat or by leaving a voicemail on our office phones.
We sincerely thank each of these members for their hard work and commitment to MacEwan and for their contribution to MSA. As we’ve said before, as a union, our strength is our members. A loss of one is a loss for all. You will be missed.
Please take care of yourselves and keep in touch.
