Guide for Coordination of Benefits
Coordination of benefits is the process where an individual covered under more than one plan combines their benefits coverage allowing the individual and any of their dependent to receive up to the maximum eligible amount for a benefit claim.
The coordination of benefits process needs to be considered by employees when making their benefit choice. To determine what level of health and dental to choose, you are encouraged to review and understand any other coverage you have to ensure you don’t pay for more coverage than you need.
Once enrolled in the plan, you and your spouse should first submit your own claims through your own group plan. Claims for dependent children should be submitted to plan of the parent who has the earlier birth date in the calendar year (year of birth is not considered). Benefits for you or a dependent will be directly reduced by any secondary plan.
